Våra race- och banåkarbilar Miata NA 1994 1.8 - The battle Miata (garage&track posts) | 1, 2, 3 >> 1 besök senaste veckan (4795 totalt) |
Hello and welcome to the battle Miata blog!
I hope this will be a long thread full of garage + racing posts about my Battle Miata. Also, the goal is to slowly write it in the Swedish language before the end of this year. Backstory: It's already been 1 year and ~5 months since I moved to beautiful Sweden. I've traveled here by my track-ready Honda Prelude bb6 and have been driven on track days all summer of 2021. In the beginning, my idea was to continue time attack here, but after a season of track days and meeting people I definitely understood that I want to participate in real competitive racing! And unfortunately, Prelude is crazy-expensive here when it's come to body parts or even some tuning (better suspension setup for example). That's how the idea owning Miata came to my mind And after a while cutie Miata with me! Thank you, Christian, from Örebro. Specs: 1994 1.8L Open diff Ksport coilovers Bigger sway bar No AC and power steering Homemade straight exhaust Aftermarket exhaust manifold 3 sets of tyres: road, nankang ns2r, nankang ar1 Suspension and weight are balanced Overall ready for Roadsport C with all needed What I already did / changed: Engine oil obviously Fuel filter and pump Front brake discs and pads Handmade bucket seat mount Wheel alignment ongoing What currently making me sad: * 3rd gear crunchy sound. When shifting up to 3rd from >4k rpm and downshifting from 4th with >3k rpm * Engine sound. I feel that it could be tensioner bearing that makes this sound.. I'll post some reports here in the thread. _________________ Eugene Maltsev Mazda Miata NA 1.8 BMW e39 540i touring |

yep, found it near Lund with another enthusiast but we're looking for a new one closer to Malmö and with more comfort. however, let's see. I've spent nice winter working in this garage. _________________ Eugene Maltsev Mazda Miata NA 1.8 BMW e39 540i touring |

There was an awesome MSCC track day at Ljungbyhed Motorbana last Friday!
And I wanna say I enjoyed it so much, however, after a day of banracing I'v had two concerns regarding car. The first was about front breaking discs, they just cracked. But that was a super easy fix and the second one was about engine. Now it sounds terrible. Take a look: https://youtu.be/pfIdhMmpfug I feel that it sounds like tensioner or idler bearing but not sure. My idea is to buy a stethoscope in Biltema and listen carefully. But maybe someone knows the most common Miata engine issue so I could avoid buying tools that I'm not sure when I'll use next time? _________________ Eugene Maltsev Mazda Miata NA 1.8 BMW e39 540i touring |

Thanks Kari ! Will check it tomorrow.
Meanwhile, any recommendation for Transmission oil from fellow Miata owners? I'm looking for this one: https://www.forspeed.se/amsoil-produ (AMS-MTGQT Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90 ) _________________ Eugene Maltsev Mazda Miata NA 1.8 BMW e39 540i touring |

Good to meet you at the MSCC Ljungbyhed event! Spotted you a few days after, driving your Miata in Malmö, but I was incognito in a battle-scared E46 Touring
Reg transmission fluid, I believe there's Redline in mine based on the previous owner's account but not sure what kind. I'm sure this was of great help to you _________________ Filip Norén, Malmö | Miata NA | BMW E46 Touring |

So, I bought a stethoscope and check the engine. Well, sounds like a tensioner or water pump which is good cos I don't need to look for a new engine but on other hand, it's some completely new work for me Expecting 3-4 garage sessions.
Fortunately, I have spare tensioners and a water pump from the previous owner. Can I change tensioners without removing the timing belt? Should do it faster if I want to enjoy summer with Miata. Meanwhile fixing the rear brakes for Prelude. I completely destroyed brake pads and my rear brake caliper told me that it need some love before putting on new pads. Then I could pass a bilbesiktning. _________________ Eugene Maltsev Mazda Miata NA 1.8 BMW e39 540i touring |

Started engine work (timing belt, tensioners, water pump etc.) , so it will take some time. AHHH want to drive Miata already
Meanwhile selling Prelude: https://rejsa.nu/forum/viewtopic.php _________________ Eugene Maltsev Mazda Miata NA 1.8 BMW e39 540i touring |

Slowly started to disassemble things to have a clear view of the engine.
And what I have seen surprised me a lot! IT'S A BUMP IN MY CRANKSHAFT PULLEY. Could it be a reason for the odd sound on low RPM? But sure, looking at this oil marks something definitely wrong inside. Also, I found some antifreeze + oil marks under the car, probably water pump also needs to be changed. that was short garage evening session: but now, where I can buy a spare crankshaft pulley? IL motorsport doesn't have any :/ _________________ Eugene Maltsev Mazda Miata NA 1.8 BMW e39 540i touring |

I doubt that the noise is caused by the "bump" in the pulley. Not impossible, but... unlikely.
Going by the pace of the tapping, my money would be on something's in the valve train. But, if so, you would have heard it from the valve cover with the stethoscope. Have you drained the oil yet? I suggest draining the oil and cutting the oil filter open. Look thru the creases/pockets of the filter and shine a flashlight on the oil as you swirl it around. If you see glittery and sparkly things - start looking for a new engine. If not, keep looking for the source. _________________ /Torkel Kristensson #90 i Roadsport C, SPVM "Best bad idea ever!" Thanks Torkel!
Yep, when I used the stethoscope knocking sound was super quiet around valve cover and really intense around timing belt cover, especially near the idler bearing. But yep, definitely going to cut the oil filter and do proper maintenance. Better to know what to expect Thank you! _________________ Eugene Maltsev Mazda Miata NA 1.8 BMW e39 540i touring |

Okay, fixed it!
surprisingly cool method to keep your camshaft still: however, pulley boss was totally destroyed (facepalm.jpg) changed to the new one AND HOORAY IT'S WORKING (And no strange knocking sounds anymore ) WIN! A bit of timing adjustment finally ready to go! Next step is to change transmission fluid and pray that it will fix crunchy sound on 3rd gear.. Nearest trackday: Tuesday 2 Aug. Sturup Raceway evening training from Svedala Motorklubb _________________ Eugene Maltsev Mazda Miata NA 1.8 BMW e39 540i touring |

Changed transmission fluid to fix 3rd gear crunchy sound... and it doesn't help at all
A bit better shifting feeling but gearing to 3rd from 4k rpm is still painful. Not saying how bad is downshifting from 4th Sounds like a winter project for removing and fixing transmission. Can someone help me where I could find spare transmission / gears or should I just go with synchronizer change? I don't wanna go with 6 speed tho, 5 speed and cheapest variant is more then enough to race. _________________ Eugene Maltsev Mazda Miata NA 1.8 BMW e39 540i touring |

At the prices of the 5speed you can get at least two before it's worth opening it up (seals etc are not cheap). But getting a problem free one is a gamble.

Hej,
kan någon skriva bästa tider för roadsport C / standardklass för de Svenska racerbanor? (Sturup, Knutstorp, ljungbyhed, mantorp etc) Tack! (sorry for the mistakes, pushing myself to start writing in Swedish) _________________ Eugene Maltsev Mazda Miata NA 1.8 BMW e39 540i touring |

Well, since the last post only a couple of trackdays on Miata (Sturup )
Probably need to fix the rubber on sway bar link or just change sway bar link itself. Overall car still running with crunchy 3rd gear and weird cold engine sounds but all good. It's gonna be a long winter! Also moved to the garage inside Malmö. Awesome and just 10 min bike from home which is perfect! ready for winter days . And yep, great garage neighbors around, so much fun and knowledge share Aaaand still selling my Honda Prelude. ahhh it's almost impossible to sell a nice car without proper history here. what a shame. I even not sad about money, I am frustrated that car just stays and no one drives it. It should be driven a lot!!! https://rejsa.nu/forum/viewtopic.php _________________ Eugene Maltsev Mazda Miata NA 1.8 BMW e39 540i touring |
